Below is a railway map of the J31 area circa 1915. There are no less than 6 different railway companies owning different bits of the local rail network. Many of the railway lines are closed, especially the spurs to long closed collieries. Many of the train passenger stations are long closed to - there is none at Anston, Beighton, Dinnington, Killamarsh, Thurcroft or Waleswood in 2011 to name but six.

The pits are clearly indicated at places like Dinnington Main Colliery (Main-Barnsley seam), Thurcroft Colliery and West Kiveton Colliery.

If you want to see what they looked like with steam trains running on them in the 1950s see the trains page.
